The museum is great, and don't miss Battery Point lighthouse. I would encourage you to read the reviews for lodging :-) There are several others that have ocean views. It is smaller, older and also practically right on the sand with a lower price than Brookings. That is the only lodging on the beach in Brookings, other than a B&B or two.Ĭrescent City also has one of the best situated motels in far northern California called the Crescent Beach Motel. It is right on the beach, but is on the pricey side. The grocery stores are newer and nicer.īrookings does have one of the best located motels along the entire Oregon coast, the Best Western Beachside Inn. It has a large base of fairly wealthy retirees that are attracted to the mild climate. When it was rebuilt, unfortunately they used that awful mid-1960's "box" style of architecture which now is looking obviously dated and in some areas, downright grim.īrookings is much, er, "glossier" and newer all around. It was completely destroyed in the massive 1964 tsunami and flood. However, overall, it is what might be called a "blue-collar" town with a long history of logging and fishing. Most people zip through Crescent City on the highway without ever bothering to get off the main road to enjoy the many attractions there. By contrast, I enjoy Crescent City and have spent a lot of time there :-)Īnd yes, there are oceanfront and ocean view motels there - in fact, Crescent City has more than Brookings!
